It is often useful to have a pictorial record of the back surface of the eye in order to check for changes in structure over time, or to provide a magnified image for more detailed analysis. Often, this will involve taking pictures of the macula or the optic nerve head.
In order to get a view of the back surface of the eye, it will be necessary to enlarge the pupils of the eye using dilation drops prescribed by a consultant. The drops normally take 10-15 minutes to work, though they may take longer. After dilation, the vision will be blurry for a few hours, so patients are reminded not to drive. The pictures are recorded using a digital system, so it is possible to view and print the images immediately after they have been taken. We use a Kodak Dye Sublimation printer to produce photographic quality prints straight from the computer. Images may also be e-mailed directly to the consultant.
