The OCT is a sophisticated type of camera that records reflections from the various layers of the retina at the back of the eye. The camera can calculate the depth of the layers by measuring the length of time it takes for the reflection to return to the camera. As light can travel up to 2mm into the retina, there may be several reflections from the various layers below the surface. Although the technology of the test is very advanced, the procedure is actually very simple. The patient sees a bright red light, which flickers as the scan is taken. Generally there is no need for dilation of the pupils unless the pupil is very small.
