GDx PolarimetryPurpose:
To measure the thickness of the Retinal Nerve Fibre Layer (RNFL) at the back of the eyes. If the pressure in the eye is sufficient this layer of nerve fibre can become damaged, reducing its thickness. This will also reduce the sensitivity of the eyes as less information can get to the optic nerve.
Procedure:
Looking into the lens of the camera, the patient will see a small flashing light in the midst of a bright red background. We will take a few images with the machine on each eye. These will be analysed against a database on the machine to see if the results are within the normal range. We can also look for change in the nerve fibre layer if there has been more than one examination.
How Long Does It Take?
The test takes about 15 minutes.
